The effects of exercise impact nearly every system in the body, including the brain. Research has demonstrated that exercise leads to the creation of new brain neurons, or neurogenesis. These new cells tend to cluster together in the parts of the brain used for memory and critical thinking, thus helping these mental processes. Exercise also prompts the maintenance and regeneration of current brain neurons. The likely mechanism behind this phenomenon is the proteins and other substances that migrate through the blood and brain because of exercise. One study found that more intense exercise led to progressively higher levels of protein cathepsin B, which led to progressively better performances on a memory test immediately afterwards. Furthermore, exercise prompts the pituitary gland to release endorphins, which boost mood and emotional well-being. 💪@exercise_science💪
